I said in our discussion of giants in Genesis 6 that we would return to the issue. Genesis 6 tells us that the giants would be on earth after the flood as well. But scripture does not give us any indication of any repeat of the cross breeding that occurred before the flood. Those angels appear to be in bondage (where they still await judgment) and there is no indication that any more have fallen in that way.
To review: Noah was the man chosen to begin again after the flood. Scripture tells us that he was "perfect in his generations (genealogy)". He was without blemish or defect. And that was in all his generations...including his sons, which means his wife was also without blemish or defect as well. He, and his wife and sons, were 100 percent human.
The same may not be able to be said about the sons' wives. Somewhere the gene for giantism has survived. This is more than a mutation, it is a non-human cross-breed. Angelic genetics has survived.
How do we know this?
In Numbers 13, right after the Exodus, twelve spies are sent to check out this land that has been promised to the Israelites. It is the land of the Canaanites. Remember, these are the cursed ones that we discussed last time. Here is the response of those who return.
27 Thus they told him, and said, “We went in to the land where you sent us; and it certainly does flow with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. 28 Nevertheless, the people who live in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large; and moreover, we saw the descendants of Anak there. 29 Amalek is living in the land of the Negev and the Hittites and the Jebusites and the Amorites are living in the hill country, and the Canaanites are living by the sea and by the side of the Jordan.”
30 Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “We should by all means go up and take possession of it, for we will surely overcome it.” 31 But the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are too strong for us.” 32 So they gave out to the sons of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, “The land through which we have gone, in spying it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants; and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great size. 33 There also we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak are part of the Nephilim); and we became like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.”
So. The land is crawling with giants. This is the last time that "Nephilim" are mentioned, but it does say that the Anakim are of that group.
Deuteronomy 3:8-11
8 “Thus we took the land at that time from the hand of the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, from the valley of Arnon to Mount Hermon 9 (Sidonians call Hermon Sirion, and the Amorites call it Senir): 10 all the cities of the plateau and all Gilead and all Bashan, as far as Salecah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 11 (For only Og king of Bashan was left of the remnant of the Rephaim. Behold, his bedstead was an iron bedstead; it is in Rabbah of the sons of Ammon. Its length was nine cubits and its width four cubits by ordinary cubit.)
Here is an Amorite king named Og who has a bed that is a bit large...14 or 15 feet long. So he was a bit tall...a giant for sure.
Amos 2:9
9 “Yet it was I who destroyed the Amorite before them,
Though his height was like the height of cedars And he was strong as the oaks;
I even destroyed his fruit above and his root below.
Amos confirms for us that the Amorites were tall and strong.
Genesis 14 tells us that there were some kings in the area who had been vassals to Chedorlaomer, the king of Elam, part of modern day Iran. But they rebelled and Chedorlaomer came to enforce his will.
5 In the fourteenth year Chedorlaomer and the kings that were with him, came and defeated the Rephaim in Ashteroth-karnaim and the Zuzim in Ham and the Emim in Shaveh-kiriathaim, 6 and the Horites in their Mount Seir, as far as El-paran, which is by the wilderness. 7 Then they turned back and came to En-mishpat (that is, Kadesh), and conquered all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites, who lived in Hazazon-tamar.
Of these peoples, the Rephaim, the Zuzim, the Emim, and the Amorites were all giants. I don't know about the others.
1 Samuel 17 describes the giant Goliath
4 Then a champion came out from the armies of the Philistines named Goliath, from Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span. 5 He had a bronze helmet on his head, and he was clothed with scale-armor which weighed five thousand shekels of bronze. 6 He also had bronze greaves on his legs and a bronze javelin slung between his shoulders. 7 The shaft of his spear was like a weaver’s beam, and the head of his spear weighed six hundred shekels of iron; his shield-carrier also walked before him.
He was about 10 feet tall. His armor weighed 125 pounds. A weaver's beam is several inches in diameter and that spear was tipped with a 15 pound spearhead. Think about it.
So, giants did exist and were well-mentioned in scripture.
When one looks at the nations that these giants came from, one finds that all are descendants of Ham. Special emphasis is given to the sons of Canaan. So, it is evident that the giant gene survived through the wife of Ham.
The Canaanites received special attention from God. The Israelites were commanded to destroy ALL of them UTTERLY! Not a one...man, woman, or child...was to be allowed to survive. He described them as nations mightier than Israel. Israel was not to make a covenant with them or marry with them. God is not going to allow them to live. And it was not only their physical strength and immoral practices and idolotry that singled them out. After all, the other nations around them were also idolotrous and immoral. It was because of the genetics. If Israel's genetics became contaminated with non-human genes, then a Messiah who was born man could not be 100% man, and thus could not be our redeemer.
Something else to think about.
